Example inputs are editable. Use your project values. Enter 0 where no optional allowance is intended; blank fields pause the calculation.

Calculation breakdown

Gross profit / loss = 120 − 100 = NZ$20
Displayed values are rounded. The calculation uses unrounded inputs.

How it works
- Sell from markup = cost × (1 + markup/100)
- Sell from target margin = cost ÷ (1 − margin/100)
- Gross profit = sell − cost
- Markup % = gross profit ÷ cost × 100 (cost > 0)
- Margin % = gross profit ÷ sell × 100 (sell > 0)
Worked example
NZ$100 cost + 20% markup = NZ$120 sell, NZ$20 gross profit and 16.67% margin. A 20% target margin on NZ$100 cost needs NZ$125 sell.
Assumptions and practical notes
Amounts are NZD excluding GST on a consistent cost/sell basis. Negative profit indicates a loss. Include the costs you want to recover; this tool does not supply overheads, tax or a recommended market price.
